IU Scholarship Student Graduates with 1st Class Honors

My Parents and I

In his own words.........My leap to success
“The road to success is not straight; it is full of curves and disappointments.” This has been the main pillar that has guided my life all through my academic and social life. I come from a humble family of eight. My parents, who are my role models brought us up to be focused and encouraged us to view life in a positive way and that putting God first and hard work is important for success. Even though they only possess primary education, their constant pieces of advice still guides me to date. My brothers and sisters, who also stood with these principles struggled the much they could to better their lives. Unfortunately, they could not progress further with their education due to financial constraints. I owe my life particularly to my older brother who sincerely accepted to be a cook in my High school in order for me to pursue and finish my studies. Life was full of challenges in high school especially being sent home every now and then due to lack of school fees. The meager salary of my brother as a cook could not pay my fee and sister who was also in high school.

After obtaining a good grade (B+) in High school amidst all the challenges, a new chapter opened in my life. I kept wondering how I would raise fees to join college/university given the fact that I still had Ksh.12, 000 arrears in high school. It was during this time that I came across Kenya School of Professional Studies (now Inoorero University) advert which wanted those in need to apply for scholarships. I felt this was an opportunity for me and indeed applied and qualified for it. I shared this with my family, who were happy but still wondered whether it was really a full scholarship. Money at this time was hard to come by because most of my younger siblings were in high school. The scholarship award ceremony for all those who had qualified made me believe that this was real. I was now ready to join KSPS to pursue my dream career. I could not wait for this day and finally on the 7th of May 2007, I set my journey to KSPS where it would be my home for the next three years.

Life initially in college was full of challenges because I had to seek accommodation and maneuver with the challenging transportation in Nairobi. Getting fare was a big problem and had to sometimes trek for kilometers so that I could pay less. I soon adapted though. I knew very well that the secret of life is getting started if you want to move ahead, breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks and then starting on the first one. Finally I managed to finish my first year amidst some ups and downs. I started my second year with a lot of aspirations and goals and always praying for good health, peace of mind and getting understanding and encouraging friends. The university management was very supportive and this made me to organize myself so as to perform well. As it is said, second year is a challenging year for every student; I kept reminding myself that, before I do something, it was important to think of the consequences. I also knew that having good friends, learning from my mistakes and fighting for my dreams was my main goal that I had. I was guided by the most fundamental questions in my life which are:

  • Where did I come from?
  • Where am I now?
  • Why am I in this world?
  • What I am capable of doing?
  • Where am I heading to?

My life in college was enriching. I liked to involve myself in most of the college activities which I knew would not only improve my academics but also my social life. I participated in games, university choir, community engagements (social responsibility) and spiritual life in CU. I believed in the principle suggested by Mary Manin Morrissey that, “ you don’t wait for something big to occur, but start where you are with what you have, and that will always lead you into something greater.” I knew that if I participated in these activities within my reach in college, I would soon be able to grow bigger and learn more lessons of life. It was challenging participating in these activities especially the ridicule I got from my friends who thought that I was wasting a great deal of time.
The final academic results of my second year set a new beginning for my career; I began to realize the potential of not only obtaining a first class honours but also getting the job of my dream. It was also to encourage the institution to continue assisting bright and needy students in the society. My success came by putting God first in everything I did, hard work, determination, consistency, support from my sponsors (Inoorero University), friends, family members and proper time management. Time was particularly precious for me. I divided my time in four main activities: class work, extra curriculum activities, revision and rest. I made my revision time to be in the afternoon hours because this was my prime and best time reading and understanding time.

With these theories in place, I found my third and final year not only enjoyable but also a year of success. At this time, I had discovered another secret of life that, always associate with positive people who will inspire, encourage and help you in times of need. I got friends outside the school realm who became my mentors and role models. Some of these include the chairperson business department Rachel Kimani, the registrar Gatheca Muthoni, the DVC Wamuyu Kambo and the lecturers. The entire staff of Inoorero University was also encouraging to me since they are not only qualified but also committed and dedicated to their work.

My final fate came during the graduation on 29/07/2010 at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). I had obtained a grade of my dream (first class honors) in BCOMBA (Finance option). I was delighted and encouraged but still I had a lot awaiting me. It was not my own making but I thank the Almighty Father for making me achieve this grade and for the far He has brought me. I would also wish my heartfelt gratitude to the Inoorero University fraternity for giving me a scholarship and giving me a chance to prove my worth. I may lack words to express my joy, thanks and happiness to Inoorero University, but have in mind my success is too your success. I would also wish to thank my parents and my older brother for instilling discipline and good morals in me.
