Community, the backbone role of entrepreneurs

Perfection Plus Ltd is an organization producing high quality works of art and craft with wood as the basic material. With our products on display in East Africa, UK, Australia and the US we have a global reach. The company was formed in 1998 by gifted entrepreneurial artists with the vision to utilize their talent to spread the gospel in a simple but most pervasive way.

The speaker, George Kinuthia spoke of the humble beginnings from where perfection plus has risen

"The business started from the support of my mother who encouraged my siblings and I to rear rabbits when we were young and she would buy them from us so that w e could have the same rabbit meat for supper.

I lost four badges and was afraid on how to get money to replace them. I used my mother’s machines to create wooden badges to replace the lost ones. Thereafter, everybody wanted a badge like mine and became the supplier for the badges."

George Kariuki also spoke of the challenges he faced as a budding entrepreneur

"Entrepreneurship has many challenges but you have to see and be determined to go beyond them. Some of the challenges that I faced included the non payment for my services and goods because I was a young man and still living with my parents. Thereafter I decide to go and stand on my own and started a workshop using an old body of a bus. You must learn to use any available resource. The work shop had rooms, electricity and the machines that I cut the pieces of wood. However, I met one of the great challenges. My workshop was burnt down, but I never gave up.
The next difficult problem was the duplication of my products by my competitors without franchise. Some of the new products and designs that I have produced include a “vuvuzela pen”. The ball point "top cover" has been designed innovatively that it should not be lost as it normally happens with many ball point pens. After consulting a lawyer, I realized that I could not raise the required amount of money to pay the lawyer and the proceedings would take a long time. I decided to ignore and move on by creating new more innovative designs that would give me an edge over the competition."

George Kariuki also underscored the importance of giving back to the community in the form of community service
"Every business exists in the background of a community as customers and stake holders. I decided to introduce a design club in the nearby school for people with skills."
