The launch of Inoorero University marked another milestone in provision of higher education by private universities in Kenya. Inoorero University was started 25 years ago as Kenya School of Professional Studies, mainly offering tuition for courses in banking, accountancy, secretarial and insurance at certificate and diploma levels.
When it started operations in 1983, it had four members of staff and nineteen students, operating from Finance House on Loita Street. By the time it received a letter of interim authority in mid September, it had 136 full time staff, 65 part-timers and over 2,700 students. A Letter of Interim Authority is issued by the Commission for Higher Education on probationary basis to an institution wishing to become a university. It takes several years to be granted the letter of interim authority.
Inoorero University now plans move to a new complex at Kiserian. According to the Chairman of the university’s board of Trustees David Mutiso, construction of the new campus begins in January next year. “ The complex houses the three schools of business, Information and Communication Technology and Law, state of the art library, administration block, students’ centre, amphitheatre, students’ halls of residence indoor and outdoor sporting facilities nestled among well manicured lawns and gardens in a serene environment at the foot of the Ngong Hills” adds Mutiso.
Vice Chancellor Professor Henry Thairu says Inoorero is an “enterprise university whose aim is to impact on life, society and industry by equipping learners with skills, knowledge and right attitude”. The university’s school of Information and Communication Technology offers a bachelors degree in ICT in addition to diplomas and certificates. The School of Business offers a bachelor of commerce as well as diploma and certificate courses while the School of Law offers a Bachelor of law, diploma in law and an Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) certificate.
In addition Inoorero University offers executive development training in management, corporate leadership, marketing, Human Resource management, customer service and personal development. “Our courses are market driven and are also delivered through e-learning for flexibility, convenience and affordability” says Deputy Vice Chancellor Wamuyu Kambo adding that the “tech-savvy enterprising and vibrant youthful culture of Inoorero University is an experience central to the educational program as it offers students a supportive and enriching environment full of opportunities for personal growth”.
