On a day that the nation was bidding a farewell to one of her greatest environmentalist, Prof. Wangari Maathai, Saturday 8th October 2011, Inoorero University was at the Ngong forest to officially start the rehabilitation program of 2.5 acres of the forest. This initiative is part of our CSR and is in line with one of our core values of Service to Humanity. IU is conscious of green issues and therefore very keen on conserving our environment and contributing to increasing forest cover so that Kenya can accrue all the benefits that come with it.

The IU community both staff and students contributed funds to buy the 2000 tree seedlings required to populate the 2.5 acres and to ensure their nurturing into fully grown trees.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry Thairu, while officially launching, said that the most important issue was not the number of trees we plant but ensuring that all the seedlings we plant survive. He urged everyone to always come back and check on the progress of the trees and care for them. “Trees are like babies; if they are born they must be looked after and if they are not looked after, they die”, he said. The Vice Chancellor also thanked the Forester, Mr. Barnabas Koskei for allocating us the land.

The forester, while welcoming the IU community to Ngong Forest Station , stated that the goal of Kenya Forest Services was to increase the forest cover to five percent by 2015 and our participation will would go a long way in assisting them achieve this objective.

Prof. Wangare Mathai always stressed that planting a tree is not just putting it in a hole in the ground. She emphasized on nurturing it to maturity. Inoorero University through its environmental club will take care of the trees to ensure their survival and maturity into a forest.
